Start, pause and complete a job
By the end of this article you’ll know how to move a job through its statuses from the field, how to pause your time on it, and why the Complete Job button sometimes waits.
A job has five statuses: Scheduled, Confirmed, In Progress, Completed and Canceled. The big button at the bottom of the job page offers the one step that comes next. Every step below is saved on your phone the moment you confirm it and sent on the next sync — you never need signal to change a status.
Confirm, start, complete
- Open the job. The badge on the customer card says where it is; the big button says what’s next.
- On a Scheduled job the button is Confirm Job. Tap it, and in the Update status dialog — Change this job to “Confirmed”? — tap Update. A job has to be confirmed before it can start.
- On a Confirmed job the button is Start Job. Tap it and Update. The job’s row on Work lights up as the one in progress.
- Do the work. Check off the checklist as you go — see Job notes and the service checklist.
- If you clocked in, tap Clock out first — the clock card goes away once the job is completed.
- On an In Progress job the button is Complete Job. Tap it and Update. A toast says Job updated to Completed.
- The button becomes Collect Payment, and a Next job card points you to the next stop — or says That’s a wrap when the day is done.
Tapping Cancel in the dialog changes nothing.
Tell the customer you’re on the way
Before you start, an outlined button offers Let the customer know I’m on my way. One tap sends the message — no confirmation — and the button is replaced by The customer has been told you’re on the way. It’s offered once per job, before the job starts, and only to the lead. Offline, it’s queued and sent when you reconnect.
Pause: the time clock
Pausing is about your time, not the job’s status. A job stays In Progress while you’re on a break.
- While the job is live, the Time on job card shows Clock in. Tap it — the timer starts.
- Tap Pause for a break. The timer stops and shows On break.
- Tap Resume to carry on, and Clock out when you leave.
- Today: 2:10 under the timer is your time across every job today.
You can only be clocked in on one job at a time: another job’s card says You’re clocked in on another job. until you clock out. The clock works offline and syncs with the rest.
When Complete Job waits
If your company requires every checklist step done or skipped first, the button is grayed with Check off or skip 3 steps before completing this job. underneath. See Job notes and the service checklist.
Cancel a job
While a job is live, Cancel Job sits at the bottom of the action area. Confirm it in the dialog, and it’s final: nobody in the field can undo it, and a canceled job drops out of the day’s count. If a visit just can’t happen today, skip the stop instead and let the office rebook: see Skip a stop you can’t complete.
Who can do what
Only the lead on a job changes its status, sends the on-my-way message, cancels it or collects. A helper’s page says You’re on this job with Sam — Sam runs it. You can clock in and take photos. — the clock and the camera are open to the whole crew.
If the office disagrees
Statuses are queued, so the office may change the job before your tap arrives — complete it from the desk, reassign it, cancel it. Then the office’s version wins, the job snaps to its status, and the sync bar shows 1 to review. Tap it to read why. See A job changed while you were on it.
Good to know
- Collect Payment is the one button here that needs signal. Offline it’s marked Needs a connection to collect payment. and tapping it explains the same.
- Completing a job doesn’t clock you out, and the Time on job card is only shown while the job is live — so clock out before you complete.
- A job that’s Completed or Canceled can’t be canceled, restarted or clocked on from the phone.
