Customer addresses and your service area

By the end of this article you will know how addresses work on a customer’s page, which one a job and an invoice use, and what your service area setting actually does.

Every job happens somewhere. The Addresses card on the customer’s page is where those places live: a job picks one of them when you book it, the invoice prints the billing one, and the day’s route is planned from them.

Add an address

  1. Open the customer and click Add Address in the Addresses card.
  2. Choose the Address Type: Service, Billing, Home, Work or Other. The type is a label for your team — a customer can have several of each.
  3. Give it a Label (Optional) when the type is not enough: Main Office, Mom’s house, Warehouse gate B.
  4. Pick the Country. The region and postal fields follow it — State and ZIP Code for the US, province and postal code for Canada — and the postal code is checked against that country’s format.
  5. Enter the Street Address, City, region and postal code.
  6. Switch on Primary address to make this the address the app suggests first, and Billing address to put it on invoices. A customer has one of each; switching one on takes it off the address that had it. The first address you add gets both automatically.
  7. Click Add Address.

The pencil on an address opens the same form to edit it, including the two switches.

What happens when you save

The address is located on the map as it is saved. That position is what drive-time estimates, the day’s routes and the technician’s navigation use — so a street the map cannot find is worth a second look before the job. Renaming a label or changing a switch does not look it up again; changing the street does.

Remove an address

The trash icon removes an address, after a confirmation that names it. Two rules protect you:

  • The last address stays. The remove button is disabled when it is the only one.
  • An address with work still attached stays. If a job that has not been completed or cancelled is booked there, or a subscription will make its next visit there, the app refuses and tells you why. Finish, move or cancel that work first.

An address that was removed is gone from the customer and from the technician’s phone. Older jobs that were done there stop showing it; invoices keep the address text they were issued with. So remove an address that was entered wrong, and keep one the customer simply moved away from if you want its history readable.

Customers manage their own addresses too

A customer signed in to your customer portal can add and edit their addresses and pick one when they book. The same rules apply there — a removed address cannot be one a job still depends on.

Your service area

Service Area in Settings → Company is a description of where you work: a Radius (miles) around a centre point. It is shown to you and used for your own planning. It is not checked against a customer’s address — the app will happily book a job outside the radius. Use it as a reference, not a fence.
