Add a customer from the field
By the end of this article you’ll have added a new customer from your phone — someone who walked up in a driveway or called while you were between stops — and know what the app does with them once you tap save.
Two ways in
- On its own. On Work, tap the + button and choose New customer. This is for the walk-up you’re not booking yet: contact details and an address, nothing else. Their page opens once they’re saved, so you can add a vehicle or come back later.
- While booking. In the Customer step of a new job or quote, search the box that reads Search customers by name or phone. If they’re not there, tap New customer under the results — the same form opens in place, and the person you save is picked for the job.
If the + button on Work doesn’t offer New customer, your role can’t add customers. Ask the office.
Fill in the form
- Pick the Customer type: Person or Business.
- For a business, enter the Business name — it’s what the customer will be called everywhere. The First name and Last name fields stay there for the person you deal with.
- For a person, enter the First name, the Last name or both — one of them is enough.
- Add a Phone and an Email if you have them. Both are optional, but each one lets the app tell you later if this customer is already on file.
- Under Service address, tap Use my location to fill in the Street, City, State and ZIP code from where you’re standing. Check what it filled in and correct anything that looks wrong — you’re at the address, the phone is only guessing. Or type the four fields yourself.
- Tap Save Customer. It stays greyed out until the name and all four address fields are in.
Customer saved. shows briefly, then the customer’s page opens.
If the app thinks they’re already in your customers
Before saving, the app compares what you typed against every customer on your phone. If the email matches, the phone number matches, or the full name matches exactly, it asks Already in your customers? and tells you which detail collided.
- Use this customer opens the existing person instead of adding a second copy.
- Create anyway saves a new record — the right answer when two people genuinely share a name.
This check only runs when adding. When you edit a customer, the app doesn’t compare them against themselves.
Working without signal
Saving needs no connection. The note above the button says it: Saved on this device and sent when you’re back online. The customer is on your phone at once and reaches the office on the next sync; until then their page carries a Saved on this device, not yet sent. badge.
Use my location does need a connection, because turning coordinates into a street address is a lookup. Offline it stays on screen but greyed, with a note saying to type the address instead.
Good to know
- Cancel in the top corner asks Discard what you entered? once you’ve typed anything. Keep editing goes back to the form; Discard leaves without saving.
- One address, and it’s both the service and billing address. A customer with more than one address is set up in the office.
- The address is part of adding a customer, not of editing one — once saved, it’s changed from the office.
- If Use my location can’t produce an address, the note under the button says why: location access declined or switched off, no fix from the device, or simply no address at that spot. Each one ends the same way — type the address.
