Route optimization for mobile detailers: how much drive time you’re really losing

A mobile detailer sells hours, and every hour spent driving between stops is an hour not sold. Most owners know their day could be ordered better; few have measured what the current order costs. Here’s a way to measure it, and what changes when the software does the ordering.

The same six stops, two orders

Say a tech has six stops across a metro, booked in the order the customers called. Taken in that order the day zig-zags across town, and each leg averages 25 minutes: 5 legs × 25 = about 2 hours 5 minutes driving.

Order the same six stops by drive time from home and realistic clustering brings the average leg down to about 15 minutes: 5 × 15 = 1 hour 15. The difference is 50 minutes a day.

Those are illustrative numbers — your city and your booking pattern set the real ones. The shape never changes, though: booking order isn’t driving order, and the gap between them is paid in hours.

What 50 minutes a day is worth

Fifty minutes a day, five days a week, is about 4 hours a week and 200 hours a year per tech. Three ways to value that:

  • As jobs — at a 90-minute maintenance detail, that’s two more jobs a week, about 100 a year, per van.
  • As fuel — 50 minutes of city driving is 15–20 miles; at 15 mpg and $3.50 a gallon, about $4 a day, $1,000 a year per van. Small next to the labor, but real.
  • As the tech’s day — a route that ends near home instead of across town is the difference between a crew that stays and one that quits.

What route optimization has to do

It isn’t a map with pins. It has to do four things:

  • Order stops by actual drive time, not straight-line distance, from where the day starts.
  • Start from the right place — home, the shop, or wherever the tech is when the day changes at noon.
